Causes of Water Pollution and Cures to Stop It Now
Causes of Water Pollution and Cures to Stop it Now Nature plays a role when it comes to toxins like mercury and other heavy metals, but humans are among the major causes of water pollution. We have always treated the planet with a certain level of disregard, as if we simply thought that nothing we could do would be of any consequence. Now though, the way we have treated our environment is coming back to haunt us. Since the beginning of the industrial revolution we have unleashed 80,000 chemical agents into the environment, and now traces of these chemical agents reside in our drinking water reservoirs. You may think that such miniscule amounts of these toxins cannot do you any real harm, but the truth is that even chemical traces canâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Pollution is one of the signs that humans have exceeded those limits. How serious is the problem? According to the environmental campaign organization WWF: Pollution from toxic chemicals threatens life on this planet. Every ocean and every continent, from the tropics to the once-pristine polar regions, is contaminated. Photo: Detergent pollution entering a river. Photo courtesy of US Fish amp; Wildlife Service Photo Library. What is water pollution? Water pollution can be defined in many ways. Usually, it means one or more substances have built up in water to such an extent that they cause problems for animals or people. Oceans, lakes, rivers, and other inland waters can naturally clean up a certain amount of pollution by dispersing it harmlessly. If you poured a cup of black ink into a river, the ink would quickly disappear into the rivers much larger volume of clean water. The ink would still be there in the river, but in such a low concentration that you would not be able to see it. At such low levels, the chemicals in the ink probably would not present any real problem. However, if you poured gallons of ink into a river every few seconds through a pipe, the river would quickly turn black. The chemicals in the ink could very quickly have an effect on the quality of the water. This, in turn, could affect the health of all the plants, animals, and humans whose lives depend on the river. Thus, water pollution is all about quantities: how much of aShow MoreRelatedHuman Genome Project1311 Words à |à 5 Pagesbillion chemical letters for deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) until 1990. Essay on Okonkwo A True Hero - 1223 Words
Okonkwo achieves respect and high social status through his own heroic efforts despite being left with nothing but the dishonorable reputation of his ââ¬Å"lazy and improvidentâ⬠father. Toiling in the fields, enduring droughts, exhibiting fearless on the battlefield, and fueled by a burning desire to succeed, Okonkwo becomes a hero in Umuofia. Okonkwoââ¬â¢s success stems from his hard-work and perseverance, which he achieves in spite of his fatherââ¬â¢s shortcomings. He ââ¬Å"lay[s] the foundations of a prosperous futureâ⬠by slowly and painfully working like ââ¬Å"one possessedâ⬠in order to escape ââ¬Å"his fatherââ¬â¢s contemptible life and shameful death.â⬠Okonkwo, so ââ¬Å"possessedâ⬠with escaping the lingering reputation of his father, does anything in his power to earnâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Okonkwos fear of being perceived as weak tragically leads to him to be unnecessarily violent and excessively prideful. These two fatal fl aws lead to Okonkwoââ¬â¢s own emotional isolation, and his inevitable downfall. Driven by the fear of being seen as weak and emasculated, Okonkwo exhibits hyper masculinity and rage. Although this behavior initially leads to success in the patriarchal society of Umofia, rage is his greatest bane: it masks his compassion and pusillanimity. Onkonkwoââ¬â¢s obsession to never appear feminine is driven to the extreme. He denies affection even to his own family, ââ¬Å"never show[ing] any emotion openly, unless it be the emotion of anger. To [Okonkwo] show[ing] affection was a sign of weakness; the only thing worth demonstrating was strength.â⬠(pg. 28). Okonkwo whose ââ¬Å"whole life [is] dominated by fear, the fear of failure and of weakness.â⬠(pg. 13) suppress his compassion in order to appear important and manly. Ironically this creates a stark juxtaposition between his own fear and his position as an alpha male. Rather than being masculine and courageous, Okonkwo just creates tension within his family and within himself. The pinnacle of this extreme hypermasculinity is when Okonkwo ignores the wisdom of the elder Ezeudu, and violently kills his ââ¬Å"sonâ⬠Ikamafuna: ââ¬Å"As the man who had cleared his throat drew up and raised his machete, Okonkwo looked away. All Quiet on the Western Front 15 Free Essays
All Quiet on the Western Front ââ¬Å"The first bombs, the first explosion, burst into our hearts. â⬠(Remarque 88) This is what the soldiers felt like in Erich Maria Remarque novel, All Quiet on the Western Front, Paul Baumer, a young man serving in the German army during World War One, is constantly being faced with the horrible and terrifying aspects of war. From seeing, his fellow soldiers lying dead on the battle field, to learning how to survive on the western front of the war. We will write a custom essay sample on All Quiet on the Western Front 15 or any similar topic only for you Order Now With his rifle by his side and his comradeââ¬â¢s right next to him, he knew what his job was to do in the war and that was to serve his country. Although Paul fought for his country in the War, Corrie Ten Boom a member of the Dutch reformed church was faced with the horrific scenes of seeing innocent Jews being put into Concentration Camps. Although, Paul enlisted inWorld War I to help his country and then realized what war really about, Corrie helped her country in World War II in a different way by helping the Jews hide in her house and even surviving a concentration camp herself . Paul Baumer and Corrie Ten Boom both had different influences and experiences before the start of the war. Paul was eager to join the war and wanted to what he could for his country and even Paulââ¬â¢s friend Katczinky said, ââ¬Å"It would not be such a bad war if only one can get a little more sleepâ⬠(Remarque 2), this leads up to Paulââ¬â¢s friend volunteering for the war. Paul and his friends Leer, Muller and Kropp all enlisted in the war voluntarily ââ¬Å"All four are nineteen years in age, and all four joined up from the same class as volunteers for the war . In the line we have had next to none, and fourteen days is a long time at one stretchâ⬠(Remarque 2). Propaganda also had a major part on influencing Paul Baumers to join the war ââ¬Å"Enforced publicity has in our eyes restored the character of complete innocence to all these thingsâ⬠[war] (Remarque 8). Paul was also being pressured into joining the war by his teacher; a patriotic professor gave the students ââ¬Å"long lectures until the whole of their class went, under his shepherding, to the district commandant and volunteeredâ⬠(Remarque 11). His teacher always had the dream of transforming high school students into being a strong oneââ¬â¢s self and he believed that joining the military was the way to do that and turning the students into strong ââ¬Å"Iron Youthâ⬠(Remarque 19). Those who did not join the war would ââ¬Å"have been ostracized â⬠¦. but no one would ever stand out because at the time even oneââ¬â¢s parents were ready with the word ââ¬Å"cowardâ⬠â⬠(Remarque 11). The young students did not want to be thought of being disobedient to a higher authority because ââ¬Å"the idea of authorityâ⬠¦. as a greater insight and a more humane wisdomâ⬠(Remarque 12) and because of that Paul and the class volunteered their service in the war. Paul also felt like it was his oneself duty to join the war and fight for his country because ââ¬Å"We loved our countryâ⬠(Remarque 13) and wanted to serve itâ⬠[the] duty to ones country is the greatest thingâ⬠(Remarque 13) Although, Paul wanted to serve his country on the war front Corrie Ten boom had a different start to World War II. Prior to the Hollandââ¬â¢s involvement the country, was still at peace. Corrie Ten Booms family waited anxiously and gathered around the radio, for the Prime Minister of Hollandââ¬â¢s announcement about the countries involvement in the war. On May 10th, 1940 at 9:30 P. M. , the announcement came through on the families radio the Prime minister announced there would be no war, and Holland would remain neutral. The voice stopped, and Corrie Ten Boom and her sister looked over at their father and saw a fire they had never seen before. Corries Ten Boom father said, ââ¬Å"It is wrong to give people hope when there is no hope, there will be war. The Germans will attack and we will fallâ⬠( Boom 78) Corrie Ten Boom felt that if father was so skilled at being optimistic, and so slow to believe in evil. Then there would be no other choice but war. Later that night, Corrie Ten Boom, sat right up in her bed because she heard bombs dropping outside her bedroom window and saw the sky turn a red-orange. The start of the war for Corrie Ten Boom is ââ¬Å" The deepest Hell man can createâ⬠( Moore 92) Corrie Ten Boom went to her sisters Tantes room and grabbed herself towards her sister, in the darkness and we threw our arms around each other and together said ââ¬Å"warâ⬠. It was only five hours after the Prime Ministers speech. ( Boom 78-80). In the end, Paul Baumer and Corrie Ten Boom both got involved in the war but in a different way. Paul Baumers view on the World War I quickly changed; as he got more involved in the war, and his experience became abominable. The trench conditions that Paul and his comrades were living in got worse ââ¬Å"I fling myself down and when I stand up the wall of the trench is plastered with smoking splinters, lumps of flesh, and bits of uniformâ⬠(Remarque 111). Paulââ¬â¢s physical conditions become worse and mentally it became a challenge ââ¬Å"Night again. We are deadened by the strain-a deadly tension that scrapes along oneââ¬â¢s spine like a gapped knife. Our legs refuse to move, our hands tremble, our bodies are thin skin stretched painfullyâ⬠¦we have neither flesh nor muscle and longerâ⬠(Remarque 111). As the war continued to go on Paul began to lose feelings for his comrades who he cared so much for in the beginning ââ¬Å"We [soldiers] have lost feeling for one another. We can hardly control ourselvesâ⬠¦. We are insensible dead men through some dreadful trick are still able to run and killâ⬠(Remarque 116). The soldierââ¬â¢s life now will forever be changed and will now be afraid of life because of what they have seen at war ââ¬Å"I know nothing of life but despair, death, and fear. â⬠(Remarque 263) Towards the end of the war, Paulââ¬â¢s Baumers view on the war had completely changed ââ¬Å"We believe in such things but no longer do we believe in warâ⬠(Remarque 88). Although Paul Baumer served, his country on the war front Corrie Ten Boom served her country by saving hundreds of Jews lives. Corrie came from a family who were members of a Dutch reformed Christian church, which protested Nazi persecution of Jews as an injustice to fellow human beings and an affront to divine authority Holocaust encyclopedia. Corrie Ten Boom believed that God will lead her life and ââ¬Å"We will never know how God will answer our prayers, but we can expect that he will get us involved in his planâ⬠¦ (Moore 38). During the war, Corrie Ten Boom became involved in resistance efforts to hide the Jews. Family members would shelter young men sought by the Nazi, forced labor and assisted Jews in contacting persons will to hide them. Corrie Ten Boom decided to get involved with the effort to help hide the Jews in her family home in Haarlem, Netherlands. Corrie Ten Boom was able to hide the Jews by using her job as a watchmaker in her fatherââ¬â¢s shop as a cover and building contacts with resistance workers. The hiding place was located behind a false wall in her bedroom at the top of the house was an area about two feet wide and eight feet long. The entrance to the hiding place was accessible by crawling through a wooden sliding panel at the back of the linen cupboard that was built into a false wall. When the German police come to Corrieââ¬â¢s Ten booms house on February 28, 1944 they did not find those in hiding, the hiding place had kept its secret however, the Ten Boom family was arrested and taken to the Scheveningan prison. Corrie described her feelings as she was being loaded into the van ââ¬Å"In my heart was a great sense of peace. I had long expected this catastrophe. Now the blow had fallenâ⬠¦in my mind I kept telling myself Do not ever feel sorry for yourselfâ⬠(Moore 102). In September 1944 Corrie was deported to the Ravensbruek concentration camp in Germany until her release in December 1944. After her release in 1944, Corrie traveled to America to tell her fascinating Story. Paul Baumer and Corrie Ten Boom both had some similar and different experience at the end of the war. For example, Paul describes the end of the war as ââ¬Å"The cause of death like cancer and tuberculosis, like influenza and dysentery. The deaths are merely more frequent, more varied, and terribleâ⬠(Remarque 271). Paul Baulmer describes war as something were you see more death then you see survive. He admits that all war does is casue death, itââ¬â¢s like a sickness. Paul Baumers life will forever be changed. Corrie Ten Boom believed war was ââ¬Å"The deepest Hell that Man Can Creteâ⬠(Moore 92) Both Paul Baumer and Corrie Ten Boom thought that war was a terrible and frightening event to go through. By the end of the novel Paul had become peaceful with himself ââ¬Å"He [Paul] had fallen forward and lay on the earth as though sleepingâ⬠¦. is face had an expression of calm, as though almost glad the end had comeâ⬠(Remarque 296). Corrie Ten Boom however, has to live on to tell her story about hiding the Jews and her survival in the concentration camps. She received an award for recognition from the Yad Vashem Remembrance Authority as one of the righteous among nations for her resistance in Na zi persecution and helping others hide from the Gestapo and risking her own life. ââ¬Å"The tragedy of war is that it uses manââ¬â¢s best to do manââ¬â¢s worstâ⬠Henry Fosdick. When is war justified? The justification of war is when the country gains something from the war. War is still a horrific and terrible thing, and the country is killing thousands and millions of innocent civilianââ¬â¢s lives to save others. War can have a permanent scar on a soldierââ¬â¢s life and can change their lives forever. Going through the physical and mental pain of war just is not worth it. How can a country continue to go into war when thereââ¬â¢s moms and dads loosing a husband or wife, daughters and sons losing a mom or dad. A soldier having the dream to, see their son or daughter grow up but not being able to because he or she shed his blood for his country. Bibliography Boom, Corrie Ten . The Hiding Place. Climate Change Analysis free essay sample
Carbon dioxide is one of many green house gases that nutrition to global warming and can be absorbed by either land or water. It has been proven that the Saracens are able to absorb carbon dioxide fairly easier than land, so why not try to enhance carbon dioxide absorption through them. The method is also known as ocean fertilization, which meaner the idea is to dump iron into the ocean to allow phytoplankton to thrive. These phytoplankton absorb carbon dioxide and along with other nutrients and can possibly, as it dies, make its way down to the ocean floors. Essentially the goal is to feed these phytoplankton and have them drag carbon dioxide down with them to the ocean floors keeping them there for about 100 years until the natural ocean cycles would eventually surface these phytoplankton. I am all for finding different ways to help fight global warming and climate change because this planet is our home, and without it none of us will be able to do anything. We will write a custom essay sample on Climate Change Analysis or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page I believe that this could be an effective way to help fight against climate change and reduce a specific greenhouse gas. However, the article also states that this method may actually increase the production of nitrous oxide and methane which are more potent than carbon dioxide through the bacteria in the ocean that decays the biomass. It is a catch 22 situation and I believe that other methods should be found that only decrease green house gases. We should not have to sacrifice one gas for another. Another flaw in this method is that dumping iron into one area of the ocean and multiplying these phytoplankton will deprive other parts of the ocean far way of certain nutrients harming ocean life due to the natural patterns of the water flow. While reading through this article I found far more poor side effects than positive. Yet another flaw in this method is that although the phytoplankton will take the carbon dioxide with them down to the ocean floors, the water cycles will eventually surface estimated to be about 100 years later. What I would like to know is what will happen then, 100 years later when all of this carbon dioxide does surface. I believe it isnt actually a solution; it is more like simply delaying the gases form arming our climate for a century. It is similar to instead of actually cleaning your room, to Just shove everything under the bed. We will Just have to deal with all of the extra gases when they resurface. Although they know that these phytoplankton will absorb carbon dioxide, scientists still arent positive exactly how much carbon dioxide will actually be absorbed even through the increase in these micro-organisms. In conclusion I do not find this method to be very productive, and definitely not the best way to fight global warming. I am glad that they are at least finding new methods and progressing however one that depletes one gas, but possibly may increase two more is not very efficient. To fight climate change we must be able to only deplete gases, not sacrifice two for one. That kind of thinking is not going to help us. Also this simply prolongs the effects of carbon dioxide for about a century, although possibly and hopefully by then our atmosphere will have reached a point where we are out of this threat and can handle an excess load of carbon dioxide. The article also stated that it could possibly help remove several hundred million metric tons which is a fairly large amount; however the total amount of carbon in the air is estimated to be around 6. 5 billion metric tons. I truly believe with the technology and knowledge that we now have that our society should and will be able to come up with better and more efficient methods against fighting climate change and global warming, however this must happen in the near future before it comes to a point where we are beyond repair.

However, this time investment can pay off significantly in the long run, protecting both you and your sites visitors. In this article, weââ¬â¢re going to go over seven critical steps for conducting a comprehensive security audit of your website. We have a lot of ground to cover, so letââ¬â¢s get right to it! A lot of people donââ¬â¢t pay too much attention to website security until it directly affects them. To put it another way, if thereââ¬â¢s a security breach on your site, then you know you already dropped the ball at some point before that happened. The point of a full website security audit is that it enables you to review your policies and strengthen them, so you can lessen the chance of any issues down the road. By carrying out these audits periodically, itââ¬â¢s less likely that youââ¬â¢ll miss any glaring security issues, which should help ensure that your usersââ¬â¢ data is well protected. Its a good idea to do this at least once a year, although you may want to increase the frequency if your site is large or contains particularly sensitive information (such as payment details). How to conduct a website security audit (in seven steps)A thorough security audit should involve several steps since youll be evaluating your site from top to bottom. Letââ¬â¢s go through the most important tasks in order.1. Che ck for any WordPress core, plugin, theme, or PHP updatesOutdated software is one of the leading causes of website security issues. The more obsolete a piece of software becomes, the more likely it is that attackers will be able to find vulnerabilities and exploits they can use to get into your website and cause severe damage.Thatââ¬â¢s why WordPress is so insistent about prompting you to use its latest version and to update any plugins and themes installed on your website. The longer you wait to update your siteââ¬â¢s components, the more at risk you are. That also applies to your servers PHP version, which is the language WordPress is built on top of. Recent versions of PHP are more secure and faster, so itââ¬â¢s worth updating to the latest builds whenever possible.2. Manage your backups and back-up toolsAside from updating your websiteââ¬â¢s components, the most important thing you can do to ensure its safety is to back up its data often. That means creating full backu ps of all your files and your siteââ¬â¢s database and keeping copies in multiple locations. For an optimal setup, we recommend using a hosting provider that backs up your website often. On top of that, you should also set up an independent backup solution of your own. If youââ¬â¢re looking for a great backup plugin, we recommend UpdraftPlus: UpdraftPlus WordPress Backup Plugin Author(s): UpdraftPlus.Com, DavidAndersonCurrent Version: 1.16.17Last Updated: September 12, 2019updraftplus.1.16.17.zip 96%Ratings 29,914,741Downloads WP 3.2+Requires With UpdraftPlus, you can create manual backups at will and automate the process. That way, youââ¬â¢re free to focus on other things.3. Assess your usernames, passwords, and database nameMost people are terrible atà choosing safe credentials. In the worst-case scenario, youââ¬â¢ll reuse the same username and password across multiple accounts. That means if thereââ¬â¢s a single data breach, it will compromise all of them.F irst, if youââ¬â¢re using a default username such as admin for your WordPress account, youââ¬â¢ll want to change that right away. Likewise, make sure to set up a long, secure password:Ideally, youââ¬â¢ll use a password manager such as Keeper or Dashlane to help you generate unique, secure passwords and keep track of them. You should also insist that your collaborators do the same, and if possible, enforce secure passwords for your regular users as well.Likewise, using the default prefix for your WordPress database can make it easier for users to identify and attempt to gain access to it. So go ahead and change it fromà wp_à to something thats not so easy to guess.4. Remove unused plugins, themes, and files from your serverMost of us install more plugins and themes than we ever end up using. Likewise, when weââ¬â¢re done with a plugin, we often forget to uninstall it. The problem is that sometimes those old plugin and theme files can open up security vulnerabilities o n your site, even if theyââ¬â¢re deactivated. This step is pretty simple ââ¬â take a look at your Themes and Plugins tabs, and consider which ones you really need. If there are any that youââ¬â¢ve had deactivated for a while, then go ahead and get rid of them:Once you uninstall those themes and plugins, you might want to make sure they didnââ¬â¢t leave any files behind.5. Evaluate your brute force attack prevention methodsYour WordPress login page is the first line of defense against attacks, so itââ¬â¢s essential that you make sure itââ¬â¢s secure against brute force attempts. There are several ways you can do that, including:Implementing Two-Factor Authentication (2FA)Limiting the number of login attempts from a single IP within a set period of timeWhitelisting which IPs have access to the dashboardChanging the default WordPress login URLThis can involve quite a bit of work. However, you only need to implement each of those security measures once, and then you ca n forget about them until your next security audit.6. Log out or remove inactive usersIf youââ¬â¢re anything like us, you may avoid logging out of many websites, so you donââ¬â¢t have to go through the hassle of entering your credentials the next time you visit. However, that inconvenience is a small price to pay to ensure that if you lose your device, no one else can use your accounts. The easiest way to prevent that situation from happening is to configure WordPress to log out idle users automatically after a set amount of time. That way, no one can use their accounts to try and access your site. You can set this up with the free Inactive Logout plugin: Inactive Logout Author(s): Deepen BajracharyaCurrent Version: 1.9.2Last Updated: September 25, 2019inactive-logout.1.9.2.zip 96%Ratings 56,586Downloads 4.6.0Requires 7. Find and eliminate vulnerabilitiesLast but not least, there are a lot of useful tools you can use to scan your website and look for (and even patch) vul nerabilities. Weââ¬â¢re talking, of course, about WordPress security plugins.Using a WordPress security plugin can help you protect your website, by enabling you to run regular scans for vulnerabilities and infected files. There are lots of options to pick from, but if you want a quick recommendation, you canââ¬â¢t go wrong with Sucuri. It offers a ton of options while remaining very user-friendly: Sucuri Security Auditing, Malware Scanner and Security Hardening Author(s): Sucuri Inc.Current Version: 1.8.21Last Updated: May 9, 2019sucuri-scanner.1.8.21.zip 88%Ratings 5,232,030Downloads WP 3.6+Requires Wordfence is another good option you can see the differences between Wordfence and Sucuri here.On top of security tools, we also recommend that you set up a WordPress activity log plugin. WP Security Audit Log, for example, helps you keep track of every little thing that happens on your website. That includes user logins, changes to your pages, file modifications, and mo re: WP Security Audit Log Author(s): WP White SecurityCurrent Version: 3.5Last Updated: September 23, 2019wp-security-audit-log.3.5.zip 94%Ratings 1,633,644Downloads WP 3.6+Requires Combine security and audit log plugins with all the measures we covered above, and your website should be as secure as a military base.ConclusionSmart website security practices tend to focus on prevention. By making sure youââ¬â¢re on top of key tasks, you can prevent most security issues from affecting your website down the road. For example, just making sure your backup system works can save you a lot of headaches if you ever face a security breach or if your site malfunctions. There are a lot of steps involved in a thorough security audit. However, some of the most important processes involve updating all of your siteââ¬â¢s components, ensuring that your login page is well-protected, and enforcing strong password practices. For the cost of a few hours of effort, you can protect your websit e and its users much more effectively.Do you have any questions about how to conduct a full security audit of your website? Letââ¬â¢s talk about them in the comments section below! Spend some time auditing your #WordPress site's #security by following these 7 steps ðŸââ

Magnesium Facts (Mg or Atomic Number 12)
Magnesium Facts (Mg or Atomic Number 12) Magnesium is an element that is essential for human nutrition. This alkaline earth metal has atomic number 12 and element symbol Mg. The pure element is a silver-colored metal, but it tarnishes in air to give it a dull appearance. Crystals of pure magnesium metal. Lester V. Bergman / Getty Images Magnesiumà Basic Facts Atomic Number: 12 Symbol: Mg Atomic Weight: 24.305 Discovery: Recognized as an element by Black 1775; Isolated by Sir Humphrey Davy 1808 (England). Magnesium first came into use as magnesium sulfate or Epsom salt. The story goes that in 1618 a farmer in Epsom, England could not get his cattle to drink from a well with bitter-tasting water, yet the water seemed to heal skin conditions. The substance in the water (magnesium sulfate) came to be known as Epsom salts. Electron Configuration: [Ne] 3s2 Word Origin: Magnesia, a district in Thessaly, Greece (Davy initially suggested the name magnium.) Properties: Magnesium has a melting point of 648.8à °C, boiling point of 1090à °C, specific gravity of 1.738 (20à °C), and valence of 2. Magnesium metal is light (one-third lighter than aluminum), silvery-white, and relatively tough. The metal tarnishes slightly in air. Finely divided magnesium ignites upon heating in air, burning with a bright white flame. Uses: Magnesium is used in pyrotechnic and incendiary devices. It is alloyed with other metals to make them lighter and more easily welded, with applications in the aerospace industry. Magnesium is added to many propellents. It is used as a reducing agent in the preparation of uranium and other metals that are purified from their salts. Magnesite is used in refactories. Magnesium hydroxide (milk of magnesia), sulfate (Epsom salts), chloride, and citrate are used in medicine. Organic magnesium compounds have many uses. Magnesium is essential for plant and animal nutrition. Chlorophyll is a magnesium-centered porphyrin. Biological Role: All known living cells require magnesium for nucleic acid chemistry. In humans, over 300 enzymes use magnesium as a catalyst. Foods rich in magnesium include nuts, cereals, cocoa beans, green leafy vegetables, and some spices. The average adult human body contains 22 to 26 grams of magnesium, mostly in the skeleton and skeletal muscles. Magnesium deficiency (hypomagnesemia) is common and occurs in 2.5 to 15% of the population. Causes include low calcium consumption, antacid therapy, and loss from the kidneys or gastrointestinal tract. Chronic magnesium deficiency is associated with hypertension, type 2 diabetes, and metabolic syndrom. Sources: Magnesium is the 8th most abundant element in the earths crust. While it is not found free it nature, it is available in minerals including magnesite and dolomite. The metal may be obtained by electrolysis of fused magnesium chloride derived from brines and seawater. Atomic Weight: 24.305 Element Classification: Alkaline Earth Metal Isotopes: Magnesium has 21 known isotopes ranging from Mg-20 to Mg-40. Magnesium has 3 stable isotopes: Mg-24, Mg-25 and Mg-26.
